War Child

War Child

$23.12

War Child is an unflinching look at the horrors of human abuse and war-and it reflects how those horrors continue to twist and shape the lives of refugees long after they escape their own country's conflicts. This story tells the true events of one young man's courageous flight from injustice in West Africa, where he falls victim to violence at the hands of an abusive, gambling father, only to be captured by marauding rebel troops, then held prisoner, by a supposedly enlightened Western society. On his long road of despair he is subjected to a chain of continued abuse, victimization and disappointment. Weakened by his struggle for freedom, Ray begins to lose his sense of self and reality. This mental confusion eventually brings him to the brink of madness. Ray's ultimate freedom is hard won, and is accomplished only through his indomitable spirit and a strong faith that prevailed against all odds.

I wrote many historical articles before and during the American Bicentennial of 1976. I earned my BA degree from Louisiana State University in Shreveport in 1987, with two majors, Communications and History. After graduation I began photo journalism. I met John Blanchard in Mansfield. He was the newspaper editor and publisher who published my first historical articles. When he published the Bicentennial Edition of The Mansfield Enterprise, he asked me to co-edit that special edition. I greatly enjoyed that work. I have been published in Louisiana Life, Louisiana Retailer, Southwestern, Western Treasures, Grit, Shreveport Journal, The Shreveport Times, and Southern Hardware. While finishing my degree in a public relations class I was chosen to educate the public on Cystic Fibrosis. This was part of a fund drive for Hillman House, a lodging for families of Cystic Fibrosis patients undergoing treatment at Shreveport hospitals. I chose a Cystic Fibrosis Poster Child for that campaign, and photographed the child with his sister at Hillman House door. I interviewed Dr. Bettina Hillman, a nationally recognized expert in CF treatment. The campaign was a success, and Hillman House is now open and functioning.

A Child is Born

A Child is Born

$13.57

Christmas albums tend to be a blend of the traditional and familiar with the style of the recording artist, and jazz pianist Geri Allen's A Child Is Born is no exception. Allen has a technically proficient, often elaborate style as a pianist, and she uses it in her evocations of Christmas carols and hymns. There is a slight nod to Ethiopia in the brief versions of "Imagining Gena at Sunrise" and "Imagining Gena at Sunset," as well as the cover art of a black Madonna and child by Kabuya Pamela Bowens, and Allen occasionally employs a Fender Rhodes electric piano or even a Hohner clavinet for unusual effects, notably on her original "God Is with Us" (a musical setting of the Biblical passage Matthew 1:23). Most of the time, however, she takes on tunes known by most Western listeners, playing the melodies in strong right-hand statements backed by often contrasting left-hand rhythms on acoustic piano. Then, she takes off into complex improvisations that only touch back now and then to the melodies. Her playing sometimes has a new age quality, like George Winston in a slightly jazzier mode. So, this is a holiday collection for the more adventurous jazz piano fan, rather than for someone looking for a safe, warm, and fuzzy set of jazzed-up Christmas tunes. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Farah Jasmine Griffin - Spoken Word; The Women of the Gee's Bend Quilt Collective - Sampled Vocals; Carolyn Brewer - Vocals; Connaitre Miller - Vocals; Geri Allen - Farfisa Organ, Celeste, Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, Piano

Child Labour in the Diamond Industry

Child Labour in the Diamond Industry

$55.7

Child labour in the diamond industry is a widely reported and criticized issue on diamond industry for using child labour in diamond mines and polishing procedures in poor conditions mainly in India and Africa. In 1997, The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions claimed that child labour was prospering in the diamond industry in Western India, where the majority of the world's diamonds are cut and polished while workers are often paid only a fraction of 1% of the value of the stones they cut. It is argued economic growth that Western India in 1980s-90s was associated with an increase in the number of child workers who work at simple repetitive manual tasks that do not require long years of training or experience in low-paying hazardous working conditions that involve drudgery and foreclose the option of school education for most of them. There are organizations and people who try to create a public awareness about the issue, including Janine Roberts, The Anti-Slavery Society, Survival International, IndianNGO, Child Labour News Service (CLNS) managed by the Global March Against Child Labor, and IHS Child Slave Labor News.

Child Welfare and Development (Hardcover)

Child Welfare and Development (Hardcover)

$76.28

"Sachiko Bamba and Wendy L. Haight provide an in-depth understanding of the everyday experiences and perspectives of maltreated children and their substitute caregivers and teachers in Japan. Th eir innovative research program combines strategies from developmental psychology, ethnography, and intervention- oriented research. Although child advocates from around the world share certain goals and challenges, there is substantial cultural variation in how child maltreatment is understood, its origins, impact on children and families, as well as societal responses deemed appropriate. Th e authors step outside of the western cultural context to illustrate creative ecologically and developmentally based strategies for supporting the psychosocial well-being ofmaltreated children in state care, provide an alternative but complementary model to the prevalent large-scale survey strategies for conducting international research in child welfare, and provide a resource for educators to enhance the international content of human development, education, social work, and child welfare courses"--

Reforming Child Protection

Reforming Child Protection

$49.94

Child protection is one of the most high profile and challenging areas of social work, as well as one where children's lives and family life are seen to be at stake. Vital as child protection work is, this book argues that there is a pressing need for change in the understanding and consequent organization of child protection in many English speaking countries. The authors present compelling evidence from around the globe demonstrating that systems across the Western world are failing children, families and social workers. They then set out a radical plan for reform: Providing an overview of contemporary child protection policies and practices across the English speaking world Presenting a clear and innovative theoretical framework for understanding the problems in the child protection system Developing an alternative, ethical framework which locates child protection in the broader context of effective and comprehensive support for children, young people and families at the neighbourhood and community levels Grounded in the recent and contemporary literature, research and scholarly inquiry, this book capitalises on the experiences and voices of children, young people, families and workers who are the most significant stakeholders in child protection. It will be an essential read for those who work, research, teach or study in the area.

Bound Feet and Western Dress

Bound Feet and Western Dress

$16.49

"In China, a woman is nothing." Thus begins the saga of a woman born at the turn of the century to a well-to-do, highly respected Chinese family, a woman who continually defied the expectations of her family and the traditions of her culture. Growing up in the perilous years between the fall of the last emperor and the Communist Revolution, Chang Yu-i's life is marked by a series of rebellions: her refusal as a child to let her mother bind her feet, her scandalous divorce, and her rise to Vice President of China's first women's bank in her later years. In the alternating voices of two generations, this dual memoir brings together a deeply textured portrait of a woman's life in China with the very American story of Yu-i's brilliant and assimilated grandniece, struggling with her own search for identity and belonging. Written in pitch-perfect prose and alive with detail, "Bound Feet and Western Dress" is the story of independent women struggling to emerge from centuries of customs and duty.

Western Medicine: An Illustrated History

Western Medicine: An Illustrated History

$6.48

From ancient religious rituals and magical incantations, to Renaissance practices such as purging, bleeding, and trepanning, to modern day miracles such as antibiotics, CAT scans, and organ transplants, the advance of western medicine has been nothing short of astonishing. Now, in this richly illustrated volume--boasting 150 pictures, including 24 pages of color plates--readers have an authoritative and wide-ranging history of Western medicine, charting the great milestones of medical progress, from the birth of rational medicine in the classical world right up to the present day. The history begins in ancient Greece, where medical practice, under the auspices of Hippocrates and others, first looked past supernatural explanations and began to understand disease as a product of natural causes. The book examines the contributions of the great Islamic physicians, such as Rhazes (Al-Razi) and Avicenna (Ibn-Sina), who had a profound impact on the practice of medieval medicine, and it chronicles the slow growth of medical knowledge through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, illuminating the work of figures such as Paracelsus, Vesalius, and William Harvey (who explained how blood circulates through the body). But it has been in the last two centuries that medical practice has made its greatest strides, and Western Medicine provides informative portraits of figures as Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch (the fathers of bacteriology), Wilhelm Roentgen (discoverer of x-rays), and Paul Ehrlich (who pioneered the use of chemicals to destroy disease-causing organisms), and many others. And as the contributors highlight the great medical discoveries, they also cover broader medical and social themes, examining for instance the rise of medical training in universities (beginning around 1200 AD), the relationship in the Renaissance between medicine and art, and the tension between the church and an increasingly secularized medical professional class, tension that continues to this day. The book also explores nursing, midwifery, and the rise of the hospital, traces our slow understanding of the patterns of epidemics and the geography of disease (tracking for example the devastating effects of disease brought about through colonization and the slave trade), and charts our changing attitudes towards child birth, mental disease, and the doctor-patient relationship. Authoritative, informative, and beautifully designed, this volume offers a fascinating introduction to medicine in the West. In addition to its generous illustrations, the volume includes a glossary, an extended list of suggested further reading, a chronology, and a full index, making it an indispensable reference for anyone interested in medical history.

The Western

The Western

$59.13

The Western shares the excitement of the genre with the fan, addresses the suspicions of the cynic and provides students with a clear and engaging overview. The Western provides a clear, precise and engaging overview of "Western" films, from "The Great Train Robbery" (1903) to contemporary Westerns such as" Dances With Wolves" (1990), "Unforgiven" (1992) and "The Newton Boys" (1998). The Western introduces the novice to the pleasures and the meanings of the Western film, shares the excitement of the genre with the fan, addresses the suspicions of the cynic and develops the knowledge of the student of film.Until the 1980s, more Westerns were made than any other type of film. For fifty of those years, the genre was central to Hollywood's popularity and profitability. The Western explores the reasons for its success and its latter-day decline among film-makers and audiences alike. Part I charts the history of the Western film and its role in film studies. Part II traces the origins of the Western in nineteenth-century America, and in its literary, theatrical and visual imagining. This sets the scene to explore the many evolving forms in successive chapters on early silent Westerns, the series Western, the epic, the romance, the dystopian, the elegiac and, finally, the revisionist Western. The Western concludes with an extensive bibliography, filmography and select further reading. David Lusted is at the Southhampton Institute

Duccio and the Origins of Western Painting

Duccio and the Origins of Western Painting

$19.94

In 2004 the Metropolitan Museum acquired an extremely rare and beautiful "Madonna and Child "by the great painter Duccio di Buoninsegna. Duccio, who died in 1318, has long been recognized as the father of Sienese painting, and he fostered a new generation of talented and innovative painters. In art history textbooks, however, his considerable contribution to European painting is often overshadowed by the work of his contemporary Giotto. Christiansen examines the fascinating connection between Giotto and Duccio, which he likens to Michelangelo's relationship with Raphael, or Picasso's with Matisse, and explains the particular qualities that make Duccio such an essential artist.

Guitar Music from the Western Sahara

Guitar Music from the Western Sahara

$13.58

This is a CD reissue of the very first Sublime Frequencies LP, which sold out in an instant in early 2007. If you think you've heard all the great electric guitar styles in the world, think again. This Saharan sand-blizzard of fine-crushed glass will grind your face to a bloody pulp. Group Doueh play raw and unfiltered Saharawi music from the former colonial Spanish outpost of the Western Sahara. Doueh (pronounced "Doo-way") is their leader and a master of the electric guitar. He's been performing since he was a child playing in many groups before finally creating his own in the 1980s. Doueh says he's influenced by Western pop and rock music especially Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. His sound is distorted, loud and unhinged with an impressive display of virtuosity and style only known in this part of the world. His wife Halima and friend Bashiri are the two vocalists in the group. Sahrawi songs are from the sung poetry of the Hassania language. The music is based on the same modal structure as Mauritanian music, however, Doueh's style is a looser appropriation infused with a Western guitar scope, one that relies, in his words, as much on Hendrix as it does traditional Sahrawi music. It also adds a playful pop element that rarely filters through in this region. Doueh has turned down countless offers from Morocco and Europe to release his music but he decided to offer Sublime Frequencies access to his homemade recordings and photo archive for this amazing debut. I Was a Child of Holocaust Survivors (Paperback)

$11.84

The debut of artist Bernice Eisenstein, I WAS A CHILD OF HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS is part memoir, part graphic novel. Having survived Auschwitz, the author`s parents fled to Toronto in 1948, and the book chronicles her childhood as a Northern American Jew coming of age in the 1950`s. These reflections are punctuated with Eisenstein`s striking, dream-like illustrations of herself and her relatives--drawings that are a fitting and deeply personal companion to her writings. With a voice that is refreshing in its honesty and humor, she paints a loving and often amusing portrait of her youth--whether observing her TV Western-obsessed father, or relaying how as a child she thought drawing the swastika would summon Satan into the room. Speaking of her struggle to make sense of her own sheltered childhood in light of the horrors of her parents` past, Eisenstein likens herself to a "Jewish Sisyphus, pushing history and memory uphill, wondering what I`m supposed to be." This is a unique and moving story of family, and how people find the strength to move forward, even in the shadow of tremendous loss.

Giant Trees of Western America and the World

Giant Trees of Western America and the World

$31.76

As a child growing up in the Fraser Valley, Al Carder was awed by the ancient Douglas fir forests and spent hours staring up at trees that commonly stood over 300 feet high. Sixty years later, after retiring from his career as a plant biologist, he set out to find the trees that had transfixed him in his youth. Discovering many of them felled by storms or loggers, he determined to document those that were left before they could vanish from our memories as well as from our landscapes. The catalogue Dr. Carder compiled is a definitive record of the West's record-sized trees of all species, including such legends as BC's 400-plus foot Lynn Valley fir and California's massive redwood, the Eureka Tree. Next, Dr. Carder set out to answer the question, how do the giant trees of the West stack up against the great trees of the world? The result, Giant Trees of Western America and the World, reveals outstanding examples from each of the most noteworthy tree species Dr. Carder found--including some that are thousands of years old and over 300 feet high. Featuring more than 40 scale drawings, this collection of giant trees outlines the intriguing characteristics of each species, such as the resiliency of the English oak, which can endure lightning strikes and widespread rot for hundreds of years and still thrive; and the "grotesque" appearance of the African "upside-down tree," the baobab, whose width can exceed its height. Dr. Carder also describes the histories of famous trees, including the stump of a BC western red cedar so wide that eight men and women danced a quadrille on it in 1887, and the Sicilian Tree of 100 Horses, well-known for sheltering Joan, Queen of Aragon and 100 of her horsemen in a storm. Carder's enthusiasm and expertise informs and entertains even as he urges us to appreciate and protect what is left of these fascinating "monsters of the past."

Children and Childhood in Western Society Since 1500

Children and Childhood in Western Society Since 1500

$33.02

This book investigates the relationship between ideas about childhood and the actual experience of being a child, and assesses how it has changed over the span of five hundred years. Hugh Cunningham tells an engaging story of the development of ideas about childhood from the Renaissance to the present, including Locke, Rosseau, Wordsworth and Freud, revealing considerable differences in the way western societites have understood and valued childhood over time. His survey of parent/child relationships uncovers evidence of parental love, care and, in the frequent cases of child death, grief throughout the period, concluding that there was as much continuity as change in the actual relations of children and adults across these five centuries. For undergraduate courses in History of the Family, European Social History, History of Children and Gender History.

The Future of Motherhood in Western Societies (Hardcover)

The Future of Motherhood in Western Societies (Hardcover)

$154.71

Most people value to have children still highly. But what is the optimal moment to have the first? The decision on having children or not and if yes on the timing of the first is one of the most difficult ones to make, also because it more or less coincides with various other heavy decisions on shaping the life course (like on union formation, labour market career, housing accommodation, etc.). People realise that having children will fundamentally change their life and in order to fit this unknown and irreversible adventure perfectly into their life course postponement of the first birth is an easy way out as long as doubts continue and partners try to make up their mind. Modern methods of birth control are of course a very effective help in that period. What is the best moment to have the first child? And to what moment is postponement justified? There are no easy answers to these questions. Best solutions vary per person as they depend on personal circumstances and considerations (the partner may have conflicting ideas; housing accommodation; job; income; free time activities). Existing parental leave and child care arrangements are weighted as well. Unfortunately the biological clock ticks further. And, also unfortunately, assisted reproductive technology (IVF etc.) is unable to guarantee a successful outcome. Several couples end up without children involuntarily and that may lead to sorrow and grief. This interdisciplinary book overviews the process of postponement and its backgrounds in modern Western societies holistically, both at the personal and the societal level. Contributions come from reproductive, evolutionary biological and neurological sciences, as well as from demography, economy, sociology and psychology. It holds not only at women but also at men becoming first time fathers. The discussion boils down to a new policy approach for motherhood and emancipation on how to shape work and family life? It is argued that a public window where one can compo

Torina's World: A Child's Life in Madagascar

Torina's World: A Child's Life in Madagascar

$14.48

The children in Madagascar rejoice in life's natural gifts--singing, working in the fields, helping their parents, and playing with lizards. Divided into three sections: "We Live ," "We Grow " and "We Feel ," Torina's World: A Child's Life in Madagascar offers a glimpse into daily life in a Malagasy village, and encourages children in Western cultures to examine and reflect on life in a developing country. Ten years ago, author and photographer Joni Kabana spent a month in Madagascar. Her intention was to bring back images for her children showing how other children live. Torina, an eight-year-old Malagasy girl, acted as Joni's guide into this world. Back home, Joni's nine-year-old son, Benjamin Opsahl, helped edit the images and added simple, yet profound text that will engage readers across the world. Torina is now eighteen. She still lives in a small hut with her mother, father and six brothers. Her desire to further her education has been hindered by a lack of financial resources, thus a portion of the proceeds from book sales will provide funding for her education as well as other educational activities in Madagascar. Celebrate diversity with Torina's World, and join with readers young and old in embracing a multi-cultural perspective. Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child (Hardcover)

Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child (Hardcover)

$13.52

Play dates, soccer practice, day care, political correctness, drudgery without facts, television, video games, constant supervision, endless distractions: these and other insidious trends in child rearing and education are now the hallmarks of childhood. As author Anthony Esolen demonstrates in this elegantly written, often wickedly funny book, almost everything we are doing to children now constricts their imaginations, usually to serve the ulterior motives of the constrictors.Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child takes square aim at these accelerating trends, in a bitingly witty style reminiscent of C. S. Lewis, while offering parents and children hopeful alternatives. Esolen shows how imagination is snuffed out at practically every turn: in the rearing of children almost exclusively indoors; in the flattening of love to sex education, and sex education to prurience and hygiene; in the loss of traditional childhood games; in the refusal to allow children to organize themselves into teams; in the effacing of the glorious differences between the sexes; in the dismissal of the power of memory, which creates the worst of all possible worlds in school drudgery without even the merit of imparting facts; in the strict separation of the child`s world from the adult`s; and in the denial of the transcendent, which places a low ceiling on the child`s developing spirit and mind. But Esolen doesn`t stop at pointing out the problem; he offers dear solutions as well. With charming stories from his own boyhood and an assist from the master authors and thinkers of the Western tradition, Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child is a welcome respite from the overwhelming banality of contemporary culture. Interwoven throughout this indispensable guide to child rearing is a rich tapestry of the literature, music, art, and thought that once enriched the lives of American children.Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child confronts con

On this release, Aglukark consolidated her sound, and with the assistance of Chad Irschick (who had contributed to her 1992 release Arctic Rose) she managed to produce an album full of terrific songs with some heavy messages in the lyrics. This album crosses boundaries, so it is difficult to label its sound. Aglukark combines traditional native Canadian music with country and pop and produces a sound all of her own. Her voice is strong and clear throughout, and producer Irschick creates a tight backing for her. Listening to this album, it is no surprise that this CD gained her national exposure and provided her with her first hit singles ("O Siem," " Hina Na Ho," and "This Child"). All brilliant, heartfelt songs with wonderful melodies and crisp production. Native rights, family, and spirituality are the basic themes throughout, but Aglukark manages to do so without sounding preachy. This is a strong album and comes highly recommended for world music lovers. ~ Aaron Badgley, Rovi Performers: Daniel Blackman - Viola; David Blamires - Vocals (Background); David Hetherington - Cello; Debbie Fleming - Vocals (Background); Douglas Perry - Viola; Johnny Rutledge - Vocals (Background); Neil Donell - Vocals (Background); Ronald Laurie - Cello; Brian Leonard - Percussion;

Child Care Today: Getting It Right for Everyone

Child Care Today: Getting It Right for Everyone

$3.98

From the universally admired author of the best-selling classic "Your" "Baby and Child, "the first comprehensive--and objective--book on the state of child care in America and the world today. Who is caring for today's children? How well are they succeeding? What does care cost, and who is paying for it? How do parents go about choosing care for their children, and are they satisfied with what they find? Penelope Leach answers these and other urgent questions with facts and figures gathered from the most current research, brought to life by the voices of parents, including those involved in her own five-year study. Leach sees "work-home balance" as being the major conundrum of the day. She delineates the challenge of fitting children's unchanged needs into society's changing demands and the dilemma of today's parents needing to be in two places at once. She describes in detail the various ways Western countries address that challenge: care given by parents, extended family, and nonfamily; care provided in the child's home, in other homes, and in professional settings; child care funded by paying parents or by the government. Considering the issues from the various viewpoints of politicians, policy makers, professionals, parents, and children themselves, the author discusses the impact of each kind of care on children of different ages. Leach highlights the urgent need in America today for measures to raise the quality of child care, and to make the best care we can provide available to all families, just as it is (often by government mandate) in most other developed nations. Setting out clearly and candidly what is known about every aspect of child care"--"including the often hidden feelings and fears of parents"--"Penelope Leach presents a critical case for building and implementing an agenda for change.

Knowing that the time has come to take a stand against bullying in school, two brave and compassionate high school students form a gay/straight alliance to protect their friends. At what point do you stop turning a blind eye when you see someone being bullied? For Hank, someone who had endured more than his fair share of bullying, that moment was clear. When he sees Edwin, the new kid in town, being confronted on the way home from school, he knows he has to intervene. Putting his own safety aside, he steps up to save Edwin-and in doing so, learns that he has more in common with the other boy than he could have imagined. Edwin, he learns, is being raised by lesbian parents. Hank has two gay men as fathers, so he understands just what Edwin is going through. In each other, the two new friends find more than just common ground; they find the strength to make a stand, not only against the bullies, but against the belief that harassment, intimidation, and assault is acceptable. Hank and Edwin work tirelessly and creatively to create bridges of understanding and tolerance in their community. Their goal is to not only create a gay/straight alliance at their school, but to get the community behind their ideals as well. And just as they expect, they encounter resistance, intolerance, and ignorance. The strength of their friendship gives them the courage they need to see their plans realized, so that every student-gay, straight, bisexual, transgendered, and those disenfranchised in any way-can enjoy a safe, caring environment.
