Putting weight on broken foot (rigid ortho shoe)?
I was walking around on a broken foot for 10 days, thinking I had sprained it. I had it xrayed and it turned out to be broken - the 5th metastarsal near the neck (i.e. farthest area away from ankle). I saw the XRay and there was a break, with a little displacement. It was a closed fracture.
The dr. taped my 2 toes, and gave me a rigid orthotic shoe to wear. I'm supposed to go back this weekend for additional Xrays. But, from googling, many sites mention keeping one's weight off of the foot. But my dr. said nothing about it. I'm still in pain, and the rigid bottom show has me walking in an odd way. He said it would prevent me from flexing the sole and possibly moving the bone. He also said he didn't think I would need it to be pinned.
Does this right? If I'm in pain, should I be walking with my weight on my foot.
I have an aircast brace and wonder if I should be using that instead... I had a 2nd degree ankle sprain in Spring, and thought I had just reinjured it.
I suggest you don't put weight on it. It sounds to me like there's a possibility weight would worsen it. I would see what the additional xrays show and then go from there about putting weight on it or not but right now I highly suggest no weight.
