Pleasure Horsemanship
Pleasure Horsemanship

Is my QH mare too old?
I'm new to the AQHA and to competing in pleasure (this isn't to say that I've just started riding and competing). I was planning on showing my 15 year old QH in western and english pleasure/horsemanship, showmanship at halter, and trail and I've just started training. A girl that I know whose been competing in the bigger shows says that my horse is too old to compete at that level and I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of younger horses competing (like 5 year olds). My horse was trained specifically for pleasure so it's not the training that I'm worried about (she just needs some polishing up), I just don't want it to be too hard on her. No bashes please because like I said, I'm new to competing at these levels and in pleasure (I used to just do fun shows and WSCA and that was gaming).
All answers are appreciated!
There could be a rule that horses over a certain age cannot compete, and I don't know that. However, physically, Western Pleasure and the like is not too physically straining for a 15 year old horse unless it has health issues that make it so. My horse is 19 and still competing at Novice level Eventing, schooling Training to Prelim level, and doing fine. He's high maintenance, sure, but he's a TB (And if QHs are now more flimsy than TBs the breed has really gone to you-know-where) and I think we can agree hands-down that Eventing is more physically straining on the horse than WP or HUS can ever be. (Of course, he's kept in fantastic shape and never let to fall out of it, which helps a ton. Getting a "break", like the winter off, and having to regain condition again is absolutely terrible on old horses.)
I'd ignore your friend. 15 is hardly too old- she might not do as well in Halter against younger horses if the judge doesn't take into consideration her age, but by most standards she's in her prime years of performance, or just at the tail ends of them. If you keep a horse in shape, you'll be surprised what they can do.

This C Level manual builds on material covered in The United States Pony Club Manual of Horsemanship: Basics for Beginners/D Level. Whether you are a Pony Clubber who has passed the D Level tests or simply a rider who has mastered the same basics, this manual will enable you to increase your skills and teach you what you must know in order to ride independently and correctly with good position, balance, and use of the aids on the flat, over fences, and in the open. Or you may just want to have the pleasure of caring for your horse or pony and participating in your favorite riding activities. Either way, The United States Pony Club Manual of Horsemanship: Intermediate Horsemanship/C Level will give you an excellent basis in horsemanship for the lifelong enjoyment of horses and horse sports. |

To Amaze the People with Pleasure and Delight: The Horsemanship Manuals of William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle $16.78 William Cavendish, first Duke of Newcastle, was a man of great enthusiasms. A devoted Royalist and English Civil War General, his passions included women, music, writing, theatre and the finest horses. He was a widely acknowledged expert in the art of the riding house, which laid the foundations for classical dressage, and was the mark of a graceful and accomplished gentleman amongst the European nobility of the seventeenth century. Newcastle published two horsemanship manuals in 1658 and 1667, setting out his method for training the horse and, while he has been seen as a dilettante, his manuals reveal a level of dedication and precision which prove that to be untrue. In this first comprehensive study of Newcastle's manuals, Elaine Walker explores the insights they offer into his writing practice, personal philosophy and motivation, alongside their surprising relevance to the modern rider or any reader interested in the long history of human interaction with the horse. Through consideration of the manuals in their cultural context, Walker analyses Newcastle's contribution to the development of riding as an art and the way in which the texts were important to Newcastle himself during a turbulent life. |

Ranch Horsemanship: Traditional Cowboy Methods for the Recreational Rider $19.53 Not every rider yearns to start a colt or participate in a world show. Yet most want to improve their horsemanship and their horses' performances by helping them become well-broke, seasoned, and versatile mounts, just as many ranch horses are. In "Ranch Horsemanship with Curt Pate, the clinician, shows the reader how the working cowboy's methods develop a safer mount who's a pleasure to ride anywhere. His vitamin-C, rather penicillin, approach, Pate explains, is preventive horsemanship that helps riders prepare themselves and their horses step-by-step for whatever they might encounter in the round pen, arena, pasture and beyond. The starting point is an overview of the ranch horse's lifestyle, which provides a point of reference for the techniques that follow. Part two addresses cowboy horsemanship and six important transitions. The ability to make upward and downward transitions, move the hindquarters left and right, and move the forehand left and right are the building blocks necessary to perform advanced maneuvers, such as rollbacks and lead changes. These six transitions also are the basis for maneuvering uphill and down through natural obstacles and for dealing with manmade obstacles, such a gates, bridges, and bikers, as addressed in "Practical Applications." Next Pate helps the reader transfer his or her knowledge of working a horse afoot to cattle work. Even though he or she might never rope more than a bucket, Pate also walks them through rope-handling basics because that, too, is useful in developing a quiet, well-rounded mount. The book's final selection relates how using these techniques can help children become safer, more confident riders and how cowboysuse the same methods in ranch competitions. Do-it-yourself tips throughout the book give practical advice on adapting ranch-training techniques to the reader's acreage, whatever its size. |
